A brief history of movie palaces and playhouses in the movie, One Theatre Way - a film by Perry Mark Stratychuk
"Brothels and booze-tents lined the main street of Winnipeg the Wicked."
In the early days of stage and screen, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada was a microcosm of entertainment as well as the North American hub for Vaudeville chain Pantages, and a major destination for the Keith and Orpheum performance groups. Performers that graced the Winnipeg stages were everyone from Klondike Kate, to Charlie Chaplin, Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle, Basil Rathbone, and Boris Karloff.
Before television, Enrico Caruso, Milton Berle, Jack Benny, Edgar Bergen, and more appeared live on stage in the city. From the first tent screenings of Melies' A Trip to the Moon to the Walker and Pantages theatres, and on through to IMAX and VR (virtual reality) presentations, One Theatre Way: Movie Palaces and Playhouses gives a glimpse into the evolution of a rich and often flamboyant history of movie palaces and playhouses in Winnipeg.
Interviews with architects, stage performers, and former Vaudeville stars alongside 3D computer animation illustrate the talents both on stage, and behind the scenes in live theater, ballet, and movie presentations through the decades.
Perry Mark Stratychuk's film One Theatre Way: Movie Palaces and Playhouses was originally broadcast on TV in the late 1990s, and is now available to stream online for the first time, and exclusively from Menduo House on Gumroad.
